Pro Series FAQ for Students

At what performance level do I have to be to use Pro Series?

Pro Series is designed for students at high school and advanced middle school levels. The skills covered in Pro Series apply to musicians of all levels, and an ability to read music is required.

I already take lessons. Do I need Pro Series?

While weekly lessons are an ideal solution, many students comment on the lack of reinforcement in the seven-day gap between appointments. Pro Series gives you a tremendous advantage because it builds and reinforces many of the advanced performance concepts covered in private lessons. The curriculum has been designed by instrument-specific professors whose current and former students rank among some of the best musicians in the world. Pro Series lets you play along with many of these musicians from the comfort of your own practice area.

How long does Pro Series take to complete?

You can take Pro Series at whatever pace you feel comfortable. The prescribed curriculum is presented with three phases spanning nine weeks. The curriculum is designed to repeat core lessons, and each subsequent phase introduces more challenging lessons.

How do I navigate through a Pro Series lesson?

Pro Series lessons are set up with DVD chapter markers at the start of each exercise. Each exercise is introduced and covered by the host, followed by the ensemble performance of that exercise. The "pause", "rewind", and "back" buttons can be used to revisit the instruction of a particular passage, or to repeat the ensemble performance.

Why should I use Pro Series? How does this differ from regular practice?

Pro Series gives you the guidance you need to develop competitive performance skills on your instrument. Pro Series adds to your self-guided practice routine by imparting solid playing habits that make your self-guided efforts more efficient. By playing with the on-screen ensemble, you can practice balance, blend, and intonation—valuable playing habits that transfer to group performance. In short, Pro Series provides practice skills and opportunities that last a lifetime.

Which sight reading topics are covered as part of the Pro Series curriculum?

The Pro Series curriculum includes nine sight reading lessons. This means new material is constantly introduced each week. The included sight reading lessons are as follows: (1) The Road Map, (2) Subdivision, (3) Note Heads & Stems, (4) Groupings & Patterns, (5) Presentation of Style, (6) Phrase Interpretation, (7) Transposition/Clef Studies, (8) Musicianship, and (9) Comprehensive Reading.

What type of equipment do I need?

To play along with the on-screen cast, it is important to have access to a full-range sound system with enough power to accurately reproduce the volume levels of a real ensemble. In addition, Pro Series requires a DVD player and TV/monitor, as well as your instrument and music stand. Quick access to volume control is needed to make adjustments to ensure accurate balance with the ensemble.

What's included in each Pro Series Instrumental Edition?

Each Pro Series set includes the 10 instrument-specific Pro Series DVDs, the protective DVD wallet, the instrument’s full-length Companion Book, and access to the online Community.

What is the Disc Replacement Plan?

For up to three years, the Disc Replacement Plan protects your purchase. If one of your Pro Series discs becomes damaged, simply return the damaged disc and we will ship you a replacement for free. This plan includes a maximum of 10 disc replacements in the three-year period. It's very easy to enroll. In fact, you don't really have to do anything. When you purchase Pro Series and choose to add the Disc Replacement Plan, your coverage is integrated with your order history and secured in our system for future use.
